The first answer to this question may be readily obviously. How so? Well, you might not have much of a choice. More and more, affiliate programs are becoming focused on specific marketing efforts. Some sites will not let you do email marketing. Others will only let you do it! It just depends. Regardless, your first step should be to read the restrictions on the program. The company will usually make it very obvious.

Assuming you can do anything, the question becomes what really works? Well, let's start with the simplest approach. The approach would be to go with pay per click advertising. You simply post ads on a search engine like Google and start generating traffic immediately. Most of these programs will not let you put up a link that goes directly to the affiliate company. You have build your own site. Still, you can use blogs and such to do it. The downside, of course, is you have to pay for the traffic.

Search engine optimization is the second real option when it comes time to promote an affiliate site. This simply involves building a site and trying to get it ranked in the top 10 on Google, Yahoo and MSN for terms you are after. This is the technique we use for this site. For instance, we are hoping this page will appear in the top 10 on all the search engines when someone types in “what is the best way to promote an affiliate site.” The advantage of this approach is the traffic is free. The downside is you need to know how to get the site ranked and it can take some time to pull it off.

Email advertising is a third way to promote an affiliate site. It can be lucrative. Why? You can get in front of a lot of people quickly. The downside is you must comply with CAN-SPAM laws and the process can be expensive. One way around this is to build information sites and get people to sign up to receive newsletters. Since they have “opted-in” to your list, there are no CAN-SPAM issues. You then make money buy putting links in the mailings you send out to affiliate sites.



What about social media? There are some people that swear by this and some that do not. You can build Twitter lists, Facebook pages and so on. Personally, I've never bought anything off of such sites or even clicked links. If I don't do it, I pretty much assume other people don't as well. At least, not in volumes that make it worth doing. One final area worth considering is YouTube. You can make instructive videos that get huge audiences. Popular videos will pull in hundreds of thousands or millions of views. You just need to include a link to your site and some unique selling point to get people to move to your site.
